Aged

agedwomanbeachchair.jpg

This is a found foto of unknown origin, I believe from an antique store in Bellingham, Washington, USA. The ripped up program(?) at her feet intrigues me. Did she see a summer play or musical performance? I like that the aged photo of the aged woman reminds me of a quote upon a building in South Minneapolis: "Let us remember the aged, for, yes, even you too are getting older."

Update: lest anyone think I'm not capable of producing my very own photo of an aged item, please note these photos (1, 2) taken this spring over Memorial Day weekend.

I love how you presented this old photo. That old movie, "Somewhere In Time", staring Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour comes to mind for some reason.

this really could tell a whole story;
very nice done!

I hope you realize that you do not deserve the Photo Friday Noteworthy for Aged. It's not even your photo! It's a photo of someone else's photographic work. Giving you a notworthy for this is extremely insulting to all of the photographers that work hard to take their own original photos for each week's challenge. Contrary to what weirdweetabix says it not "very nice done" at all. It's thievery.

Hey, "Plage", if you're gonna dog on me, at least have the courage to use your real name or email address so I can respond. I don't make up the rules of PhotoFriday nor do I have anything to do with the judging of the entries. If you have an issue of their pick, why not take it up with them? They made the decision, not I. I simply took a picture of a picture I found, cleaned up some areas and put on a drop shadow and entered it. I said as much in the description, maybe you missed it? That said, I would agree with you that perhaps it should not be a "Noteworthy" pick since the original photo is not original to me.

Hi Jeremy, Although I don't agree with the way plage went about posting his message, I am in some agreement with it and I can understand his anger. I know you had no control over being selected as a noteworthy for Photo Friday (and I have emailed them about this), but I am saddened that a decent photographer like yourself would submit a photo that was not your original work. You shoot nice stuff. I am upset with Photo Friday for selecting such an image for a noteworthy. Lots of folks work hard and take their valuable time to take and submit original photos and many are trying to see their name and original image listed as a noteworthy. If anything I am dissappointed that a contributor to a any photo meme would submit a photo that is not their own work. I understnad that you wanted to share what you felt was an interesting image (and it is). I just wish you had not done so through a photo meme such as Photo Friday. I have looked at your other work and you have many nice images. I am surprised that you didn't shot something original. I hope to see original works from you in the future. Peace, --Will

Will - thanks for the constructive feedback. Like I said, I think I do agree with Plage (and you) that it should not be a noteworthy pick, but I don't know what criteria the people at photofriday use. Sometimes I see images that I would never have picked myself, other times I am blown away by their picks. What about the image a few themes ago that was completely Photoshopped (the composite of the same guy in a single image four different times)? How does that qualify? It was a digital composite, not a photo. Please note, however, that at NO time did I ever try to claim this was a photo of my own creation -- it's right there in the first line of text under the picture: "found foto of unknown origin." If I had any way of knowing the photographer of this image (which I would guess is at least 50 years old, perhaps much more) I would certainly give proper credit.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. This is a photo that Jeremy took of an object that he felt represented the theme. That object just happened to be a photograph. He explained clearly that the original image was not taken by him.

sonia,

The big deal is not that Jeremy used a found object as his image. He clearly stated up front that he did not take the original picture. The greater issue was with the PhotoFriday folks for choosing it as noteworthy, which is supposed to represent the best work of the photographers submitting. Even Jeremy agrees that it may not have been the best pick for the noteworthy pick.

Sonia What Geren says and... The ‘object’ that Jeremy found is a photograph that someone else made. I give him lots of credit for stating that clearly. I don’t object to his posting it, as I do to Photo Friday for picking it as a noteworthy. If Jeremy’s submission had been merely a part of a larger composition (a piece of the story) I would have no issue with his submission being awarded a Noteworthy. However it's a photo of someone else's photo. A photo-copy if you will. What if someone came along and did the same with an Ansel Adams photograph? I’d object to that as well. Also it’s a copyrighted work and would be in violation of copyright laws. Something else to consider and be careful of when posting someone else’s image. I have been writing to Photo Friday with my objections and after one email from them they have stated that they are letting this stand as a noteworthy and have said no more on it. I think it’s a slap in the face to all of those photographers who go out and shoot and submit original images each week. This is no reflection on Jeremy, as I see him as innocent in this. It’s a reflection on Photo Friday. They have set a bad precedent and insulted photographers – including you Sonia - who submit original works each week. Peace, --Will

Will and Gerenm I understand what you are saying. I just felt that Jeremy was being judged a little too harshly.

I disagree with Noteworthy many times but it really isn't that big of a deal to me. Especially not big enough to go and dog someone out like plage did. That was downright rude.

Everyone go take pics and be happy. Cheers and may you all get Noteworthy next week :)

It's an original photo (ie. not scanned or taken from another website) of something aged; namely, an aged photo. Jeremy states this very clearly. I thought it was clever...and obviously 'noteworthy', for look at the discussion it's generating.
Unless I'm missing something on photofriday.com's site, I don't see anything that says 'noteworthy' means anything other than what the word suggests.

Jeremy... This is a perfect photo for the subject... what the rest of them said about PhotoFriday. When i first started photographing for photo themes i would go out and take a fresh photo but i noticed that many fine photographers use past photos... taken by themselves of course... and i do it myself occasionally now. If you're interested in another photo theme place, consider PhotoTime. We have many excellent photographers participating and would be happy to include you. We offer a theme every Tuesday and you have a week to find the perfect photo to fit that theme... or use one you already have if you feel it's the perfect one! Our theme this week is 'Yard Art' and will present a new theme sometime between late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning next week.

I admire a person who would buy old photos of perfect strangers... just for their beauty. If you visit my website you will find a link to PhotoTime. :-)

Ahhh, I say screw 'em. And lighten up everyone! I've been a photographer since I first taught myself to develope black and white in my basement. I bought my first camera (russian SLR) with money from a paper route. After college, photography was my first career. I don't know about Photofriday, but I thought it was a perfectly good photo. He didn't try to pass it off as his own photo. If anyones life centers around getting a 'noteworthy' that much they need to get a life and concentrate more on what their own photography means to themselves. Don't let them tell you what you can or can't take pictures of, keep up the good work J.
