ALERT: One-of-a-kind custom pink iBook stolen! On Sunday night (July 25th 2004), while she was sleeping, a person (or persons) burgled Nora's house in South Minneapolis. Besides taking purses and other such things of value, her custom iBook was taken as well. She'd really appreciate having it back for her final year of college. She's already contacted the police and most pawn shops but it might take more than that so we're hoping the power of the web can assist us. Spread the word if you can. I would like to have your instructions on how to make that. I have seen "skins" that you can put on just the back of the display..but that doesn't... cover...it (excuse the pun!) It's really cool. Back in the day we use to do stuff simular to what you did.. But instead of removing the white paint we left it on. when you use certain colors, white brightens the outer coat.

So we would get a container of our favorite color ritdye.. note for brighter colors go to an r/c car shop and get some neons. Then make a tub of the dye big enough to hold all the part and soak the case. Longer you soak, the darker it is.

the white tends to make it brighter.

OK, I'm going to call you on this one: this is a Photoshop fake. As a random bit of speculation, someone who had gone through such a painstaking process would probably also have posted the steps to do this. None here.

Second, and more importantly, look at the pix which show the bottom of the pinkBook (last and next-to-last pix, especially). Look closely near the battery compartment. That's right. See the gray "lock" and "unlock" icons? Not a single mistake in the masking! But recall that Jeremy claims "The white paint was removed using rubbing alcohol and lots of time and gentle scrubbing." Two problems I can see (correct at will).

1. The plastic of the iBook is not paint but is the COLOR OF THE PLASTIC.

2. Any amount of rubbing would have removed the lock/unlock icons which ARE painted on.

On another note, a real pinkBook would have been awesome. Not only would I not mind taking a pinkBook-toting sweetie out for dinner and dancing, but I'd love to have one for myself.

1: iBooks are indeed painted.
2: the paint is on the inside of the plastic housing, which gives the iBooks their slight translucency.
3: scrubbing off the paint from the inside of the clear plastic, and repainting it would not at all effect the lock/unlock icons on the outside of the case. Pretty straightforward, actually.

It's been done. There's a picture somewhere of a guy who made the glowing Apple logo the old, seven-color Apple logo. Now THAT looked freaking cool.

The pink is good. Good shade, by the way. Not too pastel.

For the person who thinks that this a photoshop fake.

The first white G3 iBooks were clear plastic painted white under the plastic. It gave a sense of transparency like the other poster noted.

Your confusion comes from the last run of G3 iBooks that were indeed made of opaque white plastic. As far as I know these last gen G3 (and G4 for that matter) iBooks cannot be modified in this manner. Although you should be able to paint the outershell with appropriate paint after roughing the finish up some. I seem to remember a company that will paint Powerbooks, iBooks, and iPods. I don't remember the URL, but I am sure a quick Google search will turn them up.

Very cool and tempting to find an older iBook so I can have a Purple one. Perhaps, I will look into ways to color the Aluminium Powerbooks. Hmmmm. Purple Powerbook...

I have always wanted my iBook in either piano-black, bubblegum-pink og green/yellow.. It would be so neat.. I think i'll go around the pink though.. Also, Appleware will paint your laptop for far less than the ones they are selling. You have to ship it to them, of course, but it's another option.

I will be creating a minty green iBook this evening, I think. (On the Pantone Matching System chart, I think I will be going for something around PMS 344-346. Like a cool mint green Danelectro guitar I once saw.) I own two iBooks. One is dead (logic board fried) and I am scavanging parts from it. So I can experiement on the case and perhaps even try a few things that you have not. Ultimately, I will be able to create two distinct looks, and switch them out becuase I have two cases to fiddle about with. Although I will most likely leave one white until I am completely happy with the results of the new skin. The BubblegumBook looks very cool. Any pointers before I unleash the hex wrench?

Hey just as a tip, if you haven't already, call all the apple stores in the area, or in this case state, Rosedale, MOA, and Southdale. Apple staff eat up mods like thi sand clearly this awsome 'book would stand out very much, also call apple and have them flag the computer as stolen. Then if anybody does take it to an apple certified repair center they will know it is stolen.

Yes the pics are from the website becuase it happens that i didnt have a digital camera handy. however i assure you that there is more then 1 pink ibook out there and that mine was not stolen i have the original sales receipt and ofcourse if you read the auction it comes with the original box which i doubt theives would have had the oportunity to steal.
