Such An Ass I am an ass sometimes, without trying in the least. I was listening to Radio K yesterday on the way to work and turned on the radio only to hear "Werewolves in London," a song most reviled in my universe. As an avid supporter and listener of the K, I did my duty and called in and said, "As an avid supporter and listener of Radio K I'd just like to voice my displeasure with the song you are currently playing. Thanks." It's not like you can't hear it on at least two other stations 3 times a day. Anyway, the DJ was like, "Yeah... OK..." and then I hung up and went in to work. Whereupon I learned about 15 minutes later that Warren Zevon (singer of said song) had died the night before. Ur... Sorry Warren... But I still hate that song. It could have been worse. During my drive to work, I was listening to MPR and they were doing a small tribute as well, but what version of "Werewolves" do they pull out? The one from Jesse Ventura's inauguration, with Ventura singing along twith Zevon, switching the lyrics to "Werewolves of Minnesota". You think the original is annoying. posted by: Clint Pidlubny on September 9, 2003 2:18 PMI'm just tired of how they are milking this to pull out the already overplayed Zevon library. posted by: bill on September 10, 2003 2:26 PMnow all we have to do is wait for Van Morrison to die so we can hear Moondance a few more dozen times every day. posted by: Bill on September 10, 2003 2:28 PMJust a passer-by. Kudos to you for the phone call. I know nothing of Zevon save for that terrible song. In tribute or not the song is over played. Today Johnny Cash died. I have heard parts of "I walk the line" no less than 20 times in the past 3 hours. Media sucks. posted by: Leesa on September 12, 2003 8:58 AMDamn you guys are cynical. Overplayed Zevon library? Please! He had two songs at most (maybe three, if you count Linda Ronstadts "Pitiful") that ever got ANY airplay. Beyond those, I'd love to know what overplayed library you are referring to... The man was an amazing musician/songwriter with an extensive discography that most folks have or had no idea about. They just think Werewolves. Which, I agree, is unfortunate. posted by: MJ on September 12, 2003 3:21 PMmj, what I think you are mis-understanding is we weren't commenting on how extensive his song collection is, but that of all the songs he was written, he has only had one or 2 ever played on the radio, and warewolves is so overplayed. Imagine if the only Beatles song you ever heard was Octopuses Garden, your views of the Beatles would be very different. Our critique wasn't on Zevon but radio, and now that he has died, we get to hear an already overplayed song that much more. posted by: bill on September 13, 2003 2:34 PMI too hate that song with a passion that knows no bounds. I don't get this passionate about bad songs very often. I've honestly turned it off more times than I've listened to it. my first thought when Warren Zevon died was "Oh, no, an entire DAY of that d*mn song!" (and, "sorry, Warren") fortunately, I managed to stay away from the radio and thus avoided much pain. I didn't know there were others who hated this thing as much as I do. too bad I didn't know any more of his work, I guess, from other posts it might be interesting stuff. but start in with werewolves and I'll start gettting out. |
