Image Bank

You know how I'm always beggin' and wishin' for a way to dump my digital pictures from my camera to my iPod? Well, I couldn't wait any longer so I went out and bought a portable device: Sima's Image Bank (CP-150). Measuring about 5.2"x3.3"x1" the Image Bank is a portable USB 1.1 hard drive with SmartMedia and Compact Flash (Type I and II) slots. I had to buy a MemoryStick to CF adapter for my Sony camera. This thing is very basic and functional -- no extra frills here. But it seems to work great. It copies everything (no matter what) from your memory card to the internal 2.5" drive. It also will never write over any files, it always makes a new folder of data, no matter what. I got mine with a 10-gigabyte drive for only $99 at TigerDirect. Watch out -- I went to MicroCenter yesterday and they had the older version for $199 with only a 3.2 gigabyte drive and the big nasty USB connector! The manual shows you how to upgrade the hard drive using any laptop IDE drive. The only really inelegant part of this device is the battery pack, an external battery holder. Works with Windows or Mac 9 or X. Hey, it's no FlashTrax, but it is about $400 cheaper!

Hm. For $180 I was able to put together a 120gb external drive. I'd rather pay the extra $80 for the additional space and then go to the extra effort of transferring the files via a PC-connected card reader. On the other hand, I don't take as many photographs as you do. :)

but I don't want to have to haul around a PC or a laptop. therein is the main factor in my decision.

So, how is the CP-150 doing? I just bought the shell of one, sans drive, off ebay and picked up an 6 gig IMB Travelstar to put in it. I'll be heading to China in the summer, and this is was about the price of picking up a 512 mb CF card.

You have to wade through a lot of stores before you hit the first person actually writing about owning a CP-150 on Google.
